We need the power of recall.
Our elected leaders are fearless for 5 years.
Voters are powerless.
Elections are on money, muscle and media powers.
Use of money, wine and other bribes are making a false mandate.

Yes, we are running too behind to other nations. But it is not easy the change the entire system in a weeknight.
The most difficult part in the elections is "unidentified votes". We do not know how many exact number of heads are living in a region/constituency.
Every Indian must issued a Indian citizen pass with citizen code. Once this will get through then only we go for the systems.
The way we are shaping ourselves it seems another 50 years will not be sufficient to maintain basic standards.

The only problem I see is with the electoral college in a presidential election. It is now just a formality, but it's a formality that can actually change elections since it gives an all or nothing vote to each state. Without the electoral college, the popular vote would determine the president, which is the way it should be.

The system for the election of Rajya Sabha members should be changed. The Rajya Sabha, the so-called 'Council of States', does little to treat all the Indian states as equals. The system should be such that all states have the same number of representatives in the Rajya Sabha and should be directly elected. The Rajya Sabha has become a breeding ground for sycophants and those who have lost the trust of the Indian public. Many of our ministers hailing from the Rajya Sabha have been shown the door by the voter.

Wish it was as easy as you have put it.
The problem is for any requisite or even public mandate the persons required to put this in action are the same with whom you are dissatisfied and looking for change.
And if those elected start thinking positively your question may not be necessary.
Kalidas had after all realised or was made to realise he is cutting the very branch of tree he is sitting on here the situation is much tougher as the people around are as well lost in SELF..

Yes, we should change. We should get rid of the electoral college and because we can do it now have a popular vote. This could be a good way to level the voting in a third world nation or a struggling new democracy. In our country it has the potential to be manipulated and a popular vote is far better, in my humble opinion.

We need to get rid of the electoral college for starters, because we don't actually vote in the president, they do. I think the president should be voted in by the people, not just a select group of voters, I think that might change the outcome of a lot of things, and that way people might be a little happier about the outcome.

Yes.
We need to get rid of the electoral college.
The Tom Delay re-districting in order to manipulate the electoral college illustrates the corruption of it.
The fact that Al Gore had the MAJORITY vote of the USA in 2000 but lost due to the electoral college also shows that it does not represent the will of the ppl...

System of electing leaders is fine - our country gives equal opportunity for everyone to contest and win.
What is needed is a mature voter! and a movement to get more well educated people to participate in elections.
