Check the trade papers, Variety, Backstage, along with local newspapers. Join Film online groups as well as they tend to send out notices. But the best thing to do would be find an Agency that specializes in Extra's. Their are several that do nothing but track down extra's to work on major pictures. You will need a headshot most of the time.

Try classefide ads. in local news papers and start calling some of them. Yes, some may be scams, but others are pretty good. Some do charge an initial fee, and later on might set your friend up with an agent. However most companies looking for extras are going to want some money.

I see ads in the paper all the time. I see them mostly in the free want ads magazine. I have called a couple of them and the first thing they ask for is your credit card number. I think you pay them like $65. to get on their work list. I don't trust them at all. I told them that I don't have or use or want credit cards, and ask if I can send a check, they say no. That's why I think they are crooked.

My friend did this when she lived in LA. She would hear about leads during auditions. Those leads led her to become extras in a few things. The money was horrible though. She could not live off of it. She had to have another job. Now she is back in Michigan. So I say auditions lead to leads.
Good Luck!

Those jobs are usually listed in the classified section of the local newspaper. Also, your friend may inquire at the university of your town, if you have any. The tryouts are not for students only, but for the general public as well.

My answer has little to do with actually finding work and more about suggesting you watch HBO's Extras. It's all about an actor who is trying to make it , but is working as an Extra. It's with the guy from the bbc office series. It's very funny.
good luck with extra work.
