So I have the Damon Bracket system braces for my teeth but it seemed like the dentist put them on and they hurt for a week now they're ok. But how do they work, he didn't seem to use a graph or something to decided what tooth will go where. He just slapped them on and away I went in pain.....now I'm fine and now what????

I'm a dentist.

Braces work by applying just enough force to teeth to cause orthodontic movement. Contrary to popular belief, braces do not push teeth through the bone.

What is orthodontic movement, you ask? It's a bit like dipping your finger in water and moving it around, with one major difference. When a tooth is pushed in a certain direction in the bone, the bone in front of the tooth is resorbed, allowing the tooth to move. At the same time, bone is created behind the tooth. It's the dynamic nature of bone, i.e. its ability to resorb and re-form that allows orthodontic movement to take place.

Pretty neat, huh?

Braces cause pressure to be put on out of line teeth and slowly bring them into alignment with the others.

The initial pain is just the pressure you are not used to, as the teeth align the pressure subsides and so does the (pain) sensation.

Braces will straighten your teeth. Your going to wear it for a while. Then probably after a year or so, your dentist will take them off and your teeth will be straight and perfect!
