Every woman's body reacts differently to medicine. Each variety of birth control has a different hormone level in it.
Some people gain weight from certain hormone levels, some people don't.
You need to work with your GYN to find a med that controls your cycles and won't make you gain weight.
If you're a smoker, stop. That increases your weight gain. If you're a drinker, stop, that also increases your weight gain. How much caffine do you drink daily? Caffine slows down your metabolism significantly-- cut your caffine to one cup a day (slowly or else you'll go into withdrawl.) and you should see some weight slip away. Also switch to water (some juice) instead of carbonated beverages. You should see a change almost immediately.
For most women our biggest issue with weight is water weight. Like most women, I fluxuate with a 10 pound radius. Its usually water weight!! Just depends on what I've been eatting, how active I am, ow much sleep I've had, etc.
There are LOTS of factors that play into weight control that have little to do with the pill. If you can get a handle on these other things (assuming you haven't) then you should have LESS side-effects from the pill.
To answer your question specifically, when I started the pill years ago, I was on Desogen. I gained 30 lbs in a month.
Then I went to OrthoTriCyclin-- lost that 30 lbs plus another 15 and kept the weight off.
When I switched to Yasmin a few years ago, I lost another 10 lbs.
And now that I'm on Yaz, I have kept roughly the same weight for the last 5 years.
Any weight gain that I've had can be tied to physical activity or diet, NOT the Pill.
Since Desogen is one of the lowest levels of "the Pill" that's out there, its odd that I gained weight on it. So MY reaction is MUCH different than what other people may experience.
Work with your GYN. There are some great new pills out there like Yaz which not only shorten your cycle but interfere less with other parts of your body that manage weight, etc. Talk to you GYN and see if you can try some new things until you both are happy with your results. Just remember your experiences may differ from other people's based on your lifestyle and body chemistry.
Good luck!

I have never gained weight from birth control pills. I take low estrogen pills like Yasmin or Alesse. I do think you will probably have the best outcome taking a triphasic pill over a monophasic pill in regards to weight gain. Be sure to ask your OB or family doctor what they recommend.

I started on estrostep which made me gain about 25lbs. Not Good! When I asked my doctor about it she put me on Yazmin. It is the only pill that has actually been proven to make people lose weight. I have lost about 5lbs and have been on it for a month. I don't know if the 5 lbs was because of the pill or not. But if i were you I would give it a try.

I use the Nuvaring and haven't put on any weight. I'm sure there are people that have put on weight with the ring, but I haven't changed my exercise or eating habits and have maintained the same weight. The Depo shot causes an average of 4 pounds per year. That's 16 pounds in 4 years...WOW!
You can get a voucher for a free month of Nuvaring here

A couple of my friends use Yasmin and they claim that they lost weight while on it. The most weight I've ever heard anyone gain was 25 pound on depo and they lost it 4 months after they got off it.

Not sure, you may want to talk to your doctor if weight gain is a major issue for you. I think I gained maybe 15LBs...so I weighed only 100LBs or so(fast metabolism.)I had actually wanted to gain weight though...but it wasn't hard to take off...I was back down to 85LBs. with maybe 30mins. of excersise every couple of days. You also need to factor in your metabolism for things such as weight gain or loss, because not everyone has the same rate.

I use the Nuvaring and I love it! It is a low-dose, intrauterine birth control that you insert once a month. It has few side effects (no nausea or icky feeling) and I had no weight gain at all.

Talk to your doctor about it, but anything that has a low dose of estrogen shouldn't make you gain a lot of weight.

None its the hormones in them, some women it affects and some it don't, u can get low hormone ones, I would asume that these would be less likely to make u gain wait, most of the time stopping the birth control will make u loose wait.
