This bothers me..but really shouldnt, or at least thats what my friends/man tell me..
Tonight we went out for dinner and drinks with a group of friends, and were waiting until we could get a table. I heard them call one of our names (Nicole) and went to see if it was our party. Indeed it wasnt, and I told the hostess (I work with her sister) DAMN! i thought we were gettin lucky..(because its so hot outside, everyone was fanning themselves hardcore).

This biker looking guy says "with a sick sound coming out of your mouth like that, it's amazing you would ever get lucky."

I told my friends and bf this after we let the restaurant, bc i didnt want it to ruin our night.. but it hurt..

am i overreacting? I am intelligent, with a college education, etc.. and an attractive 20something lady. Picture jessica simpson. Im the exact opposite. Im a journalist, so words are my passion... I speak properly, no matter the place.
I have the slightest southern accent, no where near a drawl..

Remember good ol' Forrest Gump, Momma says, Stupid is as stupid does. Consider the source honey, and do not loose any sleep over the biker that obviously has no class. I am a Southern Belle even with the ya'll and I would have been offended as well. The only difference is that I might have walked over and whispered in his ear that he was a pimple on the butt of society and should keep his mouth shut until spoken to!! Then I would have strolled off with a smiled that would have killed!! But honey, I am probably a bit older, which I really hate to admit, but I would never let a poop like that get the best of me. You have more class than that!!! Hold you head up high and forget that biker, he is nothing to you!! Now, say goodnight and go get your beauty sleep.
Best wishes for a wonderful day tomorrow and God Bless!!!

Maybe it wasn't your accent but the use of "damn." Even bikers know when things are appropriate. If you are a pretty young girl and you use slang out of context, it looks inappropriate.

However if you were a redneck momma and just said, sh*it that sucks, he might not have said a word.

Oh, btw, you shouldn't let it bother you... he's an idiot. You don't need to be critical of someone you don't know, so mark it up to a fool that doesn't have anything better to do.

Not too many years ago when Johnny Carson was alive he had a little kid on his show. The kid talked like a hick... typical southern kid with the drawl fitting for someone that lived in the backwoods.

I just tuned in and was trying to figure out what this kid was doing on the show. It turns out he had the highest IQ in Mensa.

Sweetie, I'm an old man from the south and I too overcame the southern accent since my job caused me to work with a lot of Yankees (lol, anyone not from the south). I'll tell you what you'll learn through life... no one has anything on southerners. In my own personal opinion, and I have lived in many part of this country, people back east are generally not that bright and very much lacking in commonsense (which is a lot bigger plus than you would think... especially in journalism). Those on the west coast are just a mixture of the rest of the nation. No southern pride is needed... just be proud you are not from those other places.

What I am saying as you move around this country you keep coming back to the same conclusion. Those from the south have class. For every hick from the sticks without teeth, there is some ignorant fast talking fool in the ghetto with AIDS.

BTW, Fraternities and Sororities came from the south as they are more socially evolved around education. The Ivy League of Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, Columbia, Cornell, MIT, etc. are an equal mix of southerners.

Don't let it bother you until you get around those from the rest of the nation and then decide. I know you will come away thinking the same as I do.

I live in AZ & I am friends with two brothers (siblings not black guys) from Georgia.

They have extensive vocabularies, flawless manners, & they treat women very well. The older one is an officer in the Air Force. They either went to boarding or finish school, I can't remember, but they are very well bred young men.

Having lived out here only a few years they have the slightest southern accents. Which to me isn't a big deal because half of my family is from rural Tennessee (think dirt roads).

I hear from people all the time what hicks/hillbillies/rednecks they are, all because they talk a little slower than people who grew up on the west coast.

I think it is something that a lot of people (many more than you realize) are going to judge you by. So if it were me I would work to change it.

If you find that you cannot speak without an accent then you might think about elocution lessons.

I hope that helps.

Perhaps you should ask yourself why the opinion of some nameless drunken biker dude bothers you so much? Could it be that his random aside struck a sore point? If not, then what's it all about? Discover the real reason for your reaction and discover something new about yourself.
