No, it's the heat that straightens your hair. Use a ceramic straightener, it will dmage your hair much less. You can get them for under $60 at Target ot Baed Bath & Beyond. Just make sure you don't use it everyday, you use a protector on you hair before using the flat iron, and make sure to deep condition once a week. Also make sure to get trims every 6-8 weeks, it really makes the difference. Make sure not to brush your hair when it's soaking wet. Finger comb you hair when there is conditioner in it, then use a wooden comb if you have to when you get out of the shower. This is what I've been doing for the past couple of years and my hair is very healthy.

The one that won't damage your hair is a ceramic iron (not metal) Look up T3 Tourmaline They are $200 because they are professional straightening irons that won't damage.
