He did see his death coming.
Here are his famous words: "I am going like a lamb to the slaughter; but I am calm as a summer's morning; I have a conscience void of offense towards God, and towards all men. I shall die innocent, and it shall yet be said of me--he was murdered in cold blood." D&C 135: 4.
Why didn't he stop it then? He had finished his work, and like many of the prophets of old, he needed to seal his testimony with his own blood. Christ also knew of his own death. Did that make him stop it? No. His death was a part of his work. And Joseph Smith, his prophet, needed to go through a small degree of what the Savior suffered in order to usher in the dispensation of the fullness of times, where God could again speak, where revelation was once again received, and where people could know through prophets of the Lord that Christ is the Son of God, that he died for us and loves us, and that God speaks to us today.

I guess what gets me. How many of the LDS have actually come true. Some say he plagiarized the King James chapters at a time. Plagiarism is not inspired. The writings he receive supposedly from Jesus and Elohim were 100's of years before the King James. Think about it.
Read the Bible and see what God Almighty says about prophets.

Well, daniel, catechumen, lizzie, and sweendog, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. Joseph might have known that he was going to die, maybe not. Sweendog, you obviously have no knowledge of prophets whatsoever because you seem to have some theory that prophets must know everything or they are not prophets. That's just sad. Just because you all are troubled with your religion doesn't mean you have to get mad at the world. Sweendog, you don't know much about God at all. I bet you are the one who molested children. Because it sure wasn't Smith. If you have a religion, it is very terrible. You desperately need to change your ways. You have no knowledge. You are the one who will be all tongue-tied. You are full of lies and falsehood. You just aren't satisfied with life. I feel very sorry for you. But don't be down. All you need to do is actually pray (this might be a new concept for you). Just rethink your life. You will feel much better. And lizzie, you amuse me. You thought no Mormon would answer. WELL I DID!!!!!!!!! So go and ponder on that!

How do you know what he was thinking when he was thrown into jail or when his brother was killed? He very well may have seen it coming ... wouldn't you? Hey, I'm not sure if you're questioning him being a prophet, but there's a whole lot of good in the world now because he was!!!

I'm not sure that anyone believes prophets a) are supposed to be able to see every exact that will happen in the future b) are supposed to try and avert their deaths (think Jesus).

I agree with you completely. He was assasinated by a group of 200 people. I agree. Joseph Smith among all religoius people are frauds.

Prophets gifts can not be used for thier own personal gain. This is a gift used to help others.

Joe Smith was a crack pot and I have no Idea how this religion thrives today.. I have studied it as not wanting to be rude to the tie boys knocking on my door. But from DNA right down to the fact that he molested children gets these guys all toung tied.. Nothing beats knowldge.... This is one bad religion... Full of lies and falsehoods... I have no Idea how it stands...

Perhaps because he was not a real prophet, or perhaps because he was not meant to see his own death.
