You could date the war in one of two correct ways. As the well-informed poster above did, using the date of Iraq invading the sovereign nation of Kuwait (August 2, 1990), or the start of combat between coalition and Iraqi forces in operation Desert Storm on January 15, 1991. Either way, it is absolutely correct that the war still going on in Iraq began then, paused during the ceasefire (which the U.N. said Iraq violated during the Clinton administration), and resumed in 2003 with a new coalition. Even if you're too young, too oblivious, too doped-up, or too blinded by Bush-hatred to remember, this is the true story of our continuing campaign in Iraq.

August 2, 1990 when Iraq invaded Kuwait.

Don't let the common misconception that this part of the conflict is unrelated.

Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990 claiming that historically it is their 19th province. A coalition of forces led by the United States expelled Iraqi forces in February 1991. The cease fire was signed and from 1991 until 2003 there was a no fly zone imposed to protect the Kurds in the north and Arab shi'a in the south this along with economic sanctions were in place until Iraq met the conditions of the cease fire. Not meeting those conditions the United States again attacked Iraq in March 2003 to overthrow its leader Saddam Hussein.
