With the benefit of spellcheckers and grammer editors, some of the dead giveaways of 20 years ago are gone.

The reality is, maybe he did write the story. I could write extremely well at a young age. I know others that could too. I also had teachers that were dubious.

If this kid really did plagiarize something, what he is doing is wrong, but not nearly as bad as the damage you would do if you were to falsely accuse him, then punish him if he is innocent. If he is cheating, his true abilities should show up over time, especially if you test based on essays.

Therefore, the thing to do is, look hard for proof, and if you don't find it, then, give him the benefit of the doubt.
If I were looking for proof, I would look for significant lines, the first sentence in the first chapter, for example, and type it into the google search engine and see what you find. The key is, put the entire phrase in quotes. That way, it will search for anything that matches the entire phrase perfectly. If you don't find anything that matches, shorten it up. Keep dropping words until the search becomes useless. If the story or poem or whatever contains characters, then, search on their names.

Amazon.com has a shockingly huge library of books and writing. Much of what they have includes the first few pages. Perhaps there is a way to search amazon for anything contained in any of these pages in their library. I'd check this out.

Unfortunately, there are also essays and writing for sale on the internet. Perhaps you could look into what is available, and stumble onto what you are looking for, but as I said up top, if you don't find proof, maybe it's because his writing is authentic.

Good luck resolving this.

Google free essays and story's stuff like that. That would give you a long list of websites to try. I would ask the student to answer a short list of questions based on the story. I would look at other student story's and check for similarities. Aren't there databases you can use through the school?

I say give the benefit of the doubt. If he says he wrote it, believe him.

If you really want to find out...
not likely that you can find it on google or something...
give the students a test or something...
or read the story to the class and see his expression...

Compare that story with his previous essays ,
Is the style of writing the similar ?
Is the depth of the essay similar ?

If it is not probably he did not write it.

Another way to find out it is to extract some parts of the essay and search it on the internet. Some search engines i would recommend would be :

www.google.com & www.yahoo.com

I hope this helps !

No bibliography? If not, go on their computer or call up their parents to do this. The parents could question their kid.

You could type up the story on yahoo q and a and see if anyone recognizes it! Or google.

If you think it's a published story .... type in details in an online search and see if you can find it.
If you can test him on it .... ask him details of his story and see if he remembers them. Ask him about certain characters or specific parts ..... he should remember his own story ....
