" to thine own self be true "
someone i asked this question to said their meaning of the quote is =
don't let someone else abuse you. Never forget that you are a human being and that you have natural rights that you are born with, and no one should be allowed to take that away. Also, you need never let some one take away your self pride, self confidence, and most importantly, self respect.
would you agree ? or do you have a different view of it ?

I agree with most of that. I think of it more as not getting wrapped up with anything in the world to the point that you have lost self control. Don't forget that your own well being should come first and that if you can't help yourself, you can't really be of much help to others anyway.

I agree that you're right in part, but I think it basically means understand and be yourself. So, that could dictate behavior to the contrary. Annie Lennox(?) might disagree with you as she describes 4 basic types of people in "Sweet Dreams are Made of This." So, if being true to myself means being used or abused floats my boat, then am I not true by being a "bitc...?" Just my thoughts.

I disagree. What your friend said is mostly platitudes. Not bad advice in general, but not so pertinent. It means one should never pretend to be something you're not. If you are in a natural state of equilibrium you'll always land on your feet even though taking shortcuts by adopting(temporarily) a different identity would be more effecient or convenient.

It should start from within. You should first know what you are doing to yourself, and then reach through all that and find the a truer peace. Being centered in on that will not even allow the others to matter.

The worse thing you can do is lie to yourself. If one lie to oneself there is no hope this is self denial. To thine own self be true. Be true with yourself especially about how you feel.

I think whoever said that has low self-esteem and is trying to deny what the world is really like.

Be true to yourself. Don't put on an act and don't let others dictate your actions or feelings.
So no, I wouldn't agree with that person's meaning.
