Most states today either outright band the ownership of wolves or wolf-hybrids or they require you to apply for a special permit. However, even if your in an area (check with local and state authorities) that you can purchase one, I would definitely recommend against it. Wolves and wolf-hybrids are VERY unpredictable. Keep in mind that dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years and we still lack a complete understanding of their behavior which can lead to biting incidents. If this is something you have a serious interest in do the following: talk to AT LEAST three people who currently have a wolf or wolf-hybrid, locate a Veterinarian that will see either (most Vet's will not see these animals), if you own a home, make sure your homeowners insurance allows the animal to reside on the premises (this is important for many reasons: if you need to file a claim at all if they do not allow the breed to reside on the premises they can deny your claim, if the animal bites someone, they will not cover the lawsuit and/or cost of the medical bills, and believe it or not, they can have you blackballed to a certain degree; some insurance agencies wont even insure a home that has a German Shepherd, doberman, Rottweiler, mastiff, etc...), and do research (I.e. Internet, books, etc...).

Wolves are social animals. They don't do well on their own. Even half-wolves (interbred with dogs) are not considered safe in human settings. It took many thousands of years for the wolf to 'evolve' into the pet dog. Although externally they may look little different from certain breeds of large dogs, the wiring in the brain of the wolf is still that of an instinctive predator. In all honesty, there's nothing you can't own if you have enough money. Doesn't mean it's a good idea though.

No, you can't, there are half breeds (dog- wolf) that might be available. Wolfs are in reservations or rescues but they are not meant to be pets, several reasons but most of all they need to have other wolfs around, the wolf would need to be handled from the beggining of his life, that means to be separated from mom and hand raised by you, which is really hard if you don't have the training. You would have to teach the wolf to not be aggresive which is really hard, it's not like teaching a dog puppy, the wolf will hurt you. Check the animal planet website for Growing up wolf, it's really not a good idea to have a wild animal as a pet, they suffer too much and you will get hurt.

Wolves (and wolf hybrids) are not pets. Despite what you'll read, despite all the emotional attachment people have to this issue--the fact remains that wolves cannot and should not even remotely be domesticated.
Dogs are a sub-species of the wolf. Specially breed to be human companions. Get a big Malamute or Husky ... the next best thing to looking like a wolf without having the animal look at you as potential food.

A wolf is a wild animal, and belongs in the wild. If you like the look of a wolf there are a couple of dog breeds that have sort of a "wolfish" look to them (like a Siberian Husky), but are bred and raised to be man's best friend. Do your homework on which breed is the most suitable for you, and leave the wolves out in the wild, where they belong.

It’s not enough to view these creatures from a distance. You can have more, they say. You can own the wolf or at least a portion of it.

They’re called wolf dogs, or wolf-dog hybrids either the direct offspring or descendents of a wolf and dog mating. But they don't make good pets. Very unpredictable.

No, you cannot own a wolf. Even if you get one and legally keep it, you will always know you do not own that wolf. If you love wolves, and love their true nature, you will know you can never own a wolf.

I have just been reading state laws concerning wolf ownership. In some states, there are no permits required to own ONE wolf or wolf/dog. However, about 2/3 of the states require permits, if allowed at all. So, you would call whichever agency is in charge of fish and game in your own state.

If you really care about wolves why not try and save their habitat in the wild so that they do not become extinct. In the US we have nearly wiped them out, only a couple small populations still exist. I suggest you leave wild animals in the wild where they belong. If you are on her asking where you can obtain a pet wolf...this just proves you are not qualified to own one.

Why would you want a wolf? It's a wild animal and it should remain in the wild. Keeping wild animals is generally illegal. Dangerous too. So get yourself a regular puppy, German Sheppard slightly reminds of a wolf.
