The third and fourth posters are right. Carbs are needed by the brain and kidneys. If the body does not get enough, it will cannibalize its own muscle and use the protein to manufacture carbs to make up for the shortage. The liver and kidneys also have to work overtime to flush out the toxic byproducts. Much of the weight loss is due to lost muscle and water. Any real fat loss is because by cutting carbs, the person is just cutting calories. Also, I have had to personally administer first aid to strangers who became hypoglycemic while working out on the atkins diet (on 5 separate occasions). Here is a link that tells you the truth about the atkins diet.
