We can see someone yawn, yearn to replicate the action ourselves, and do it, all without thinking about it. Other times we’re aware it is happening, though it still floats somewhere beneath the realm of reason and of purposeful actions. Yawn contagion is largely unconscious.

Yawning is contagious because we subconsciously mimick the behavior of others around us. The act of yawning in response to others yawning involves "mirror-centers" in the brain that cause us to perform a programed motor function (yawning) in response to observing someone else doing it. Not a lot is known about this but some say the yawning act originates in a brain region called the superior temporal sulcus. Oh, and it's not only humans that do it, chimps do it too.
