im all for lifting at that age, but 30 pounds in each hand. That can put a serious strain on your muscles. i would try 10 in each hand and do twice as many repititions. What your friends are saying to you is not completely true. Lifting weights wont stunt your growth, but you have to make sure you are lifting weights the right way. Ask the PE coach at your school to show you some exercises to do and how to do them safely.

This is sort of an urban myth that's been perpetuated by popular belief. that lifting too young will stunt your growth. But, there is no scientific evidence to support this. For instance, the last US raw powerlifting championship was won by a guy who is a natural lifter and he started when he was seven, and he's 6'2" and 300 pounds. Unless his dad is seven feet tall I seriously doubt he has a problem!

What you do need to be careful about are a couple of pitfalls that, unfortunately, seems to happen to guys in your age group. Lifting too much weight to impress your friends - this is asking for injury. Lifting improperly due to lack of experience - this is why you should always have an experienced adult, not another teen, assist you and show you how to do the lifts correctly. Steroids - this goes without saying. Not only are they illegal, health issues far outweigh the benifits and you could end up with permanent health issues as a result.

So, lifting 30 pounds in each hand is cool as long as you're doing the lift properly. It's not cool if you are cheating and doing the lift with horrible form.

No, it won't hurt you. What people should avoid under 18 is too much repetition. Stagger your workouts so that you never do any one action too repetitively. Also, your bones at your age are still growing and have mushier parts than adult skeletal tissue. Avoid compaction activities, such as a young girl must avoid by foregoing going to pointe (on her toes) in ballet until her bones have developed enough for that weight-bearing. Avoid using your joints, in other words, to bear weight. Stay away from steroids. That's where all the horrible permanent physical damage is occurring in weight lifting among younger body-builders. Call around and investigate the body-builder scene in your community and tie up with some older men who can give you advice and pointers as you go.

No it wouldn't affect your growing process but in keep in mind you have to do it properly, weight lifting is a tricky business. Keep your body in a natural form and do it slowly you get more a burn and doesn't damage your joints.

there is no medical evidence that supports that resistance training stunts the growth in the young. keeping proper form should dictate the working loads that are used. never substitute weight for form, that's how injury occurs

If you are capable of doing so and not hurting yourself (straining your muscles), then it is perfectly fine. It will not stunt your growth.

If you're really worried, ask your doctor instead of a bunch of uneducated strangers.

it's up to you if you want to lift weighs this early. however bear in mind that your growth rate (for height) will decrease dramatically and you'll have shorter arms when you're older. I suggest you start after 16-18.

yes working out too much can be bad for you, i'd just stick to push-ups or sit-ups, because putting too much strain on your muscles now, could damage your body in the long- run
