I try to make good choices but at times I misunderstand or do not fully understand the situation. I think I do more good than bad.

St Paul in the New Testament seems to agree with you. He says in Romans 7
"For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do."
But in the same chapter he says
"But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter." Translating the chapter 7 in modern english he is saying
" We are free in Christ. That is a belief in Him. We are no longer under the curse of the wrong that we do because He paid the penalty."
Perhaps you could get a better handle on if you read the whole chapter.

it is called sin. You can never overcome sin. Even Christians sin (unwillingly). It is what we are........sinners.
Sin is an offence against God and He hates it and is grievous about it.
He wiped out the world at one time with the great flood (although people deny it ever happened).
Fortunately God is sooooooooo good. He became a man and died on the cross as Jesus Christ to pay for our sins.
If you repent of your sins and trust Jesus to save you, God will give you a new heart and desire to do His will.
Then God will be your saviour and not your Judge.

When we were babies and small children, we quickly learned that when we did "certain" things, we received pain. If we did these "certain" things and our parents did not see us do them, we did not receive pain. We learned these "certain" things were called "wrong" things. We learned the associated pain was called "punishment".
(All animals learn the difference between right and wrong. Doing the wrong things resulted in "pain". To avoid pain, avoid doing wrong things.)
Here comes our first decision in life.
(1) Avoid doing the wrong thing: avoid punishment.
Or
(2) Do the wrong* thing when no one is looking; avoid punishment.
We do wrong things because it was a game that we learned to play when we were very young?

It's because we are spirit and flesh. The spirit wants the things of God but the flesh wants the things of the world. Sometimes we give into our flesh. But sin always has consequences. They might not show up for years and years or they the consequences might manifest themselves in your children or your children's children.

I recommend starting with unselfishness, which seems to lead to every type of moral wrong. We see this in the golden rule and in the examples of people in world history we consider to be the most upstanding moral people.

We can't overcome it, that is why God sent Jesus Christ to "save us from our sins." If we could overcome it, He would not have had to die.
