I was wandering, has anyone here been on holidays or travelled to the West Indies (including Guyana and Isla Margarita, which are geographically located in South America, but is a part of the West Indies)?

Which islands/countries in the West Indies are the best or would u recommend to go to? Whats the climate/temperature like there? When is the best time of the year to go? Is it expensive there (I come from Australia, just so u have an idea of like costs, currency conversion etc.)? And what about safety?

What determines if an island in the caribbean is the best depends on what are the traveller interests. For instance some tourists/travellers look for the 5-start Sun,Sand and Sea vacation with excellent shopping...some prefer quiet relaxing islands that are away from it all..some for eco/nature tourism..some jus loook for the parties!
You would be surprised how very different each island is and how on the other hand they share some similarity. But what they do share though is warm temperatures all year round averaging about 30 degres celsius or 86 degrees Farenheit.
Some are more likely to get hit by a hurricane during the atlantic hurricane season due to their geographical situation.
Most islands celebrate their Carnival celebrations and other festivities at different time in the year so to know when is the best time to come to the caribbean you would already have to have an island in mind to rasearch when are their festivals to have an idea exactly when to come.
If you are searching though for the relaxing vacation on an island ..one to let u get away from it all with a choice of black sand beaches and honey coloured ones(not white). One rated as the 2nd best scuba diving/snorkelling destination in the ATLANTIC by readers choice magazine..one with 365 rivers, luch green forest uncountable waterfalls (some being discovered to this day in the interior rainforests)..one branded as the whale watching capital of the Caribbean..one that has 3 national parks one as a world heritage site ..one which has the 2nd largets boiling lake in the World!..largest of its kinda and ONLY ONE IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE...one branded as the Nature island..one rated as the 4th most peaceful place in the world..one that is considered the best kept secret...THE ENGLISH SPEAKING ISLAND OF DOMINICA...*not to be mistaken with the spanish speaking island of Dominican Republic.Take a glimpse at the links provided below to have an idea of what true caribbean is like and see that it is not the other over commercialed islands.
oh and this island isnt expensive and the local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (xcd) which is $2.67-US$1.00.

I haven't been to Guyana but have been to Isla Margarita. I have been to most of the islands as a tourist.

I live in the Dominican Republic now for 5 years because I liked this place the most.

Mean temp here is 82 degrees F. Life is good and inexpensive here. I pay 120 US dollars for a full time maid and about 180 for a full time gardener. The maid also cooks and the gardener takes care of the pool and washes the cars.

Good meal here is about 10-14 US dollars. We use the Dominican Pesos and it is about 33 to 1 US.

This place is a great place 12 months a year. We have never been hit by a hurricane on the North Coast and that is one of the reasons I live here.

This place has many different eco systems. Where I live is by the beach and 10 minutes away is the mountains. We have the highest peak in the Caribbean Pico Duarte (1.5 hours by car) and we have snow there fairly often on top and frost every day.

One hour east you have dry arid desert going towards the Haitian Border. The east cost reminds me of the Midwest US. Very flat and not a hill in sight.

I much prefer the north coast. Driving from west to east you have the mountains and cliffs on your right and the beach/ocean on the left. The best golf course in the caribbean is here and it is a Robert Trent Jones Course with 12 holes directly on the Ocean.

Much to see and the people are a friendly good looking people and man can they dance. Typical food is inexpensive and delicious! Plate of the day is under 4 dollars US of course in Pesos.

We have many casinos here if you gamble.

I can go on for hours but without more info about what you like I don't know what to say.

i've got been to the Carribean two times and Hawaii as quickly as. I cherished Hawaii extra effectual. The Carribean can, like somebody else already mentioned, have a run-down or "undesirable" feeling to it. there will be numerous persons attempting to sell you stuff and that they'll hassle you.

I would suggest going to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines myself. But then I'm biased.

Beaches run from black sand to white sand. It has jungles, pine forests, a volcano, parrots, eco tours, diving... Beautiful island, beautiful people.
