If a passport is needed, and the US citizen lost it or somehow got out of the US without one, the US Consulate or if there is no consulate the US Embassy is authorized to issue a new or replacement passport. Depending upon what documents the applicant has, this can take a number of days as documents may have to be located in the US and physically transported to the consulate. There is a fee in addition to the usual cost of a passport. If it is a passport for someone who somehow got out of the US without one, unless compelling reasons exist, the passport will be limited to authorize only one one-way trip to the US which must be taken within a limited time. A replacement passport for a lost passport may or may not be restricted, depending on the circumstances.

As long as you are not flying from Canada to the USA you do not yet need a passport to re-enter the USA.

If you are driving or aboard a train all you need is two I.D.'s one of which must be a photo I.D.

In 2008, you will need a passport any time you cross the boarder either way.

An American returning from Canada can present a driver's license or the SS card to prove citizenship in case the passport was left behind.

Go to the US Consulate in the area where the citizen is stuck. Prove citizenship and get an emergency copy of the passport issued.

You might get stuck there for a couple extra days to do some paperwork. It shouldn't be a big deal. America doesn't have a problem with Canadians coming into the country...

Get a friend to bring your passport. Or contact the U.S. government and they'll probably send someone to help you straighten it out.

It would be my dream for them to keep me in Canada! I so wish I could live in Canada.....but they are not so eager for Americans to get resident status. I think Canadians are the sexiest, warmest humans on the planet.

You can't even get on the plane without one. If it does happen, just return other people's luggage carts and get the quarters to buy food .
