These are the 5 ultra-critical items to have:

1. large hunting knife or machete
2. lighter (keep dry) and some tinder material
3. thin reflective blanket (shiny silver)- used as a beacon from the air and for warmth
4. water purifier tablets
5. pictures of friends/family*

*This sounds useless but its not. The most critical asset in a survival situation is the will to live. Having items that keep u connected to the outside world provide tremendous psychological strength to get through tough situations.

food and water of course, gps, ELT beacon, maybe a satellite phone. I guess it all depends where and how deep you are trekking.
