so i was at a party and someone had the idea to hypnotize one of my friends. so we all sat around and the hypnotist sat across from my friend. as he was talking to her, i kinda felt myself feeling relaxed as he told her, and when he told her she was becoming sleepy, i was too. he then told her her eyes were closing, and it was really hard for me to keep them open. was i hypnotized or in a trance or something? what was happening? thanks

It's very likely you were in light trance-many people will experience that while observing hypnosis, particularly if they are open to it and/or have a history of being very able to relax/meditate and are paying very close attention. I have found that true myself and had to try hard to stay out of trance at workshops I attended and even when doing it with clients, although it is not at all uncommon to achieve light trance yourself while doing it for someone else. The only type I am less receptive to is Ericksonian hypnosis as I have a tendency to just tune out as opposed to concentrate.
Don't worry, it just means you are one of the people who tends to be gifted with an easy ability to enter trance (you need to have a very developed ability to use imagery and picture things in your mind as well as concentrate deeply) and you probably would be a gifted hypnotist yourself.

Some people are much more open to hypnotism than are others. It is possible that you actually were under hypnosis--but fighting it.

In the future, I would stay away from hypnotists who perform at parties--that could be dangerous in certain circumstances.

Hypnosis is not mind control. A hypnotist cannot make you do something that you feel is against your better judgment. Hypnosis is not sleeping, You are fully aware and can experience dual mind activity. A myth about hypnosis is that smart people cannot be hypnotized. All it takes is a willingness to experience your deeper mind. No need to be afraid unless you fear yourself. If one believes that they are in full control of their minds then they know that there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Mentally challenged folks are not the ones to hypnotize. Only those of sound mind that can be guided into the depths of their sub-conscious.
