I am FINALLY purchasing a bedroom set and am trying to decide if it's really worth it/necessary to purchase a headboard and footboard. You can't buy just the headboard, so I'd have to pay for all or nothing. (I currently have just the bed on a regular metal frame, which is hidden by a bedskirt.) While I do like the look of a headboard and footboard, I hate to spend another $400 to just get them. What is your opinion? Does it really add that much to the overall feel of the room? (By the way, I am not the sort of person who would even attempt make my own headboard, so no need to suggest that...) : )

I think it's really nice without a headboard. Especially for the MONEY. Trust me when I tell you that a $400 headboard/footboard combo will BREAK. I found an inexpensive one for around $450 and it snapped in half after a year. The supports were not made well. Have you thought about just hanging a canopy from the ceiling or some drapery above the bed? That could take away from the area above the bed. Or what if you found a REALLY big picture at a discount store and placed it above the bed as a headboard? Or, you could a tape measure and measure off the dimensions of a headboard onto the wall and paint in contrasting colors a large rectangle to "look" like a headboard. I've seen this done and though it may sound funky, it actually looks pretty cool. You could even make it in sections so that there is a base color in between like 2 or 3 sections of the 'headboard' that is painted on. If you need more explanation, email me at nskiddo21.....good luck! Don't buy the headboard, it's nothing a TON of pillows or paint wont do and the price just ins't worth it.

I have a headboard, no footboard. Had it or a long time, and don't know how it got that way. I think I bought just a headboard for the last bed I had, too. I know there was no footboard.

If you do choose to go without a headboard, don't have wheels on the bed legs. You'd most likely push yourself away from the wall all the time, with the pillow.

You can't have a footboard with no headboard. That'd be like having oh, I dunno, a chair facing a wall with no legroom. You can have a headboard solo though. You CAN make your own. It's easy. Try Nieman Marcus' catalog, check out those $1000 babies and you'll run not walk to your homestore. Get a $10 piece of MDF (medium density fiberboard), then hop over to the fabric store for foam and fabric (another $20). In about 20 minutes you'll have the same thing. Did I mention you need a staple gun? That's the only tool needed. The home center will even cut the board for you. Oh, a couple of screws and a screwdriver to mount it on the wall. You're set!

Your whole bedroom set doesnt have to match. In fact, it's in nowdays to have some furniture pieces different from the rest. I personally like to have my bed angled and not flat against a wall so if I were you I'd shop around for a cheaper headboard that you can buy alone and maybe get a chest or bench with a seat that lifts up for storing blankets, clothes for a different season, or just decorations you'd like stored somewhere other than in a basement. And if you ever rearrange your room and the chest doesn't fit at the end of your bed you can still use it in your bedroom for another piece of decorative furniture!

I think that they really add a lot, but you don't have to pay that much for the look. If you aren't buying from a retail store, you can buy them seperately. Try finding something that you like at a yard sale or thrift store. Local papers will list yard or estate sales. Check out the phone book for thrist stores. Make sure to look up "thrift store", "consignment store", and "used furiture" to cover all of your bases. Craigslist is a GREAT place to find used furniture in your area. Go to Google and type in craigslist and your city. It's typically found in major cities. It's like a big yard sale online, so you'll see crap and great buys all in the same place. Plus, it updates everyday so it is always different. You can contact people who are selling their things and meet to look at the product before you buy. I've bought and sold with Craigslist and I love it!

Simple do it yourself headboard, use wooden fence slats, wooden doors, or widow frames (without the glass). These are all available at the hardware store. All you need to know is how wide your bed is. Ask the person at the store to help you find something that wide. Then just prop them against the wall and push your mattress up to them.

I don't know how you feel about Feng Shui, but this appraoch to decorating says that the headboard represents the "personal mountain". You want something solid to support you while you sleep. This represents support in your life. If you do not have a headboard, push the mattress right up to the wall for support. The footboard should not be taller than the foot of your bed or it will crowd your energy and hamper your growth in all parts of life.

No you really don't need a headboard and floorboard. In fact personally I prefer that bedroom furniture pieces not be a "set". Since you are not the handy type, you could simply hang a large piece of art over your bed to serve as a "headboard".

I had a headboard in my other house ad it was nice, but I hate dusting, so now I am in another house and just have the frame. I am a lot happier with just the frame and it makes the room simpler. I say you don't really need the head a foot board. Use the extra money if you have it for a nice soft rug.

Its all up to personal preference but I definately think a headboard and footboard finished the look of a room. Instead of paying 400 for the 2 that goes with your set, can you see if you can find something else that goes with your set, but perhaps sells the headboard only or is a cheaper set?
