25 plus years. It took the current Commandant of the Marine Corps 36 years to achieve the rank of General (4 stars). As you go up the ranks, the less there are, and the harder it is the be promoted unless another General retires.

Unless you graduate from one of the military academies, your chances of making general are rather small. Takes a large war to bridge the gap. I was a mustang (came up through the ranks from enlisted), one of the last to do so in the Air Force, and in 27 years finally made bird colonel.

Traditionally 20 years, about 5-10 year if your country in revolution mode.

Fast Track : Air force, US army is focus more on Air force, means that there will be a lot more room for a general.

Future track : Try Information Force, I bet less than 5 years if you are brilliant. China, Japan, US, some Europe already established a dedicated IT warfare.

If you first are enlisted, then it is very hard to accomplish General, as it takes a lot of years, if you go in with a masters or doctorate and you go in as a o-2, o-3 then you can see it in your career. A lot of it has to do with how well you play the politically game, and I am unsure if you mean 1star all the way up to 5star, to make 5star there has to be an active war, and that is the General of the Army, the last 5star was Gen. Powell so you can see how hard that it. If you go in as a LT, you could see Full Bird in 15-20 years, If I went in with a doctorate I would be a Capt. see major within a year, Lt. Col 4-6 after that, Full bird in 12 years after joining. Sometimes people never make General as it is hard to do.

Too long to make it worth your while...it would also involve being married to your job...and as to the othe person commenting about five stars... IN THE US ARMY THERE ARE NO MORE FIVE STARS prolly because they would then command the army and right now the commander of america army is president bush...as a matter of fact with the way things are going that wouldnt be such a bad idea to take the power of the army away from him.....anyways ill stop im just rambling right now
