ok heres the deal, i got a really cool 7 mo. old male cat. lotta personality, happy, and affectionate, he's great(actually layin on my cpu desk right now watchin me type! ha). anyway he started spraying around the apt. "marking his territory" i guess. but i have since got him nuetered and it seems to have stopped.i live alone in my bachelor pad, and work full time so can't be around all the time. and he's also an indoor cat. so i was debating on getting another cat so they could be buddies, plus i like cats. now, someone told me he'd get jealous and or territorial. if it's gonna be like that, maybe he can just stay the king of his castle. or he's still young enough, maybe he'll adjust and have a life long buddy? should the new one be male or female, young kitten, or his age? what should i look for if i decide to do so? just wanted to hear some suggestions. i appreciate your time. thanks!

I wouldn't. Cats are solitary by nature, and introducing new cats into an established household can bring back spraying, create new bad behaviors like scratching, and create catfights. I've had multiple cats before, and they almost never play together, but they definitely fought like demons most of the time. The happiest I ever saw my tabby cat was when I moved into my apartment and he was finally an only cat again.

If you decide to do it anyway, get a younger kitten than he is so he won't consider it such a threat, and get a female. Make sure you have her spayed as young as the vet will do it (if you adopt a young kitten, the SPCA will usually spay them sooner than private vets) to prevent HER from urine-marking.

Good luck either way!

I did it and it is working out great! I have a 2 year old and 6 month old, both male, both fixed. They are best buddies and I feel a lot better about them being home without me because they play all the time. Maybe I was just lucky but I would suggest if you have the choice to get a cat of the same age but opposite gender, that's supposed to work the best. Best of luck!

yes a buddy would be great for your kitty. I would get a young cat tho. He may not like the idea at first but will warm up to it then they will be best buds. Thats how my cats are.
Sex of the cat really does not matter. get a playful happy kitten.
Yes he could be jealuos at first. But he will get over it and enjoy his friend alot.
Good Luck.

If you got another cat the spraying will only get worse cos it is a territorial thing and when another cat enters its territory he will react by spraying more. the only way you are going to be able to stop him is by getting him desexed then he should stop.

you can usually introduce another cat to your cat at any age. my mom's cat is 14 and we have since he was 10 brought three females in and had three litters of kittens. expect a few little scraps as they sort out who is the top cat but that will pass and they will learn to love each other.

animals adjust. get whatever age/type of cat you want-they will get used to each other. i do suggest that you get soft paws for both of them to avoid injury if they do fight. just make sure the new cat is vaccinated before introducing it to the existing cat (as i am assuming as a good cat owner yours is fully vaccinated even though he is indoors!!!!) and also consider saving a life by adopting. most animals like having a buddy around.

If you haven't time. they play togehter. But keep an eye if you decided to do that. Slowly and with kindness and patience. Remember to love your 7month old and pay her a lot of attention. And they are young. they will get use to it very quickly.
Good idea!!!
and Good Luck!!!

if your cat is already marking its territory, DONT GET ANOTHER ONE. It will only get worse.
