Yeah, is way neat.

When I was a little fundy kid they scared the shitte out of me because I thought it seemed "demonic." It's very surreal and end-of-the-worldish because its so massive and out of the ordinary.

After living in Alaska for 15 years I have seen them many times. I encourage you to go to Fairbanks during the winter as this is the best viewing place and time. Dress very warm as it can get to -60 at times (average -20 to -40). Anchorage is not a good place because of all the city lights. There is always work and the people are great. It is the better than LSD, a sight to behold and different every night and from minute to minute.

mrdav76 you cracked me up!!!

Oh, man, yes. I've seen them numerous times. One was particularly amazing - extremely bright, and it looked like a ladder coming down from heaven towards me. It was easy to see how superstitious people could have come up with that "Jacob's Ladder" story.

Most of the ones I've seen were pale green and distant, but when the Sun is really active, there are sometimes some great displays.

Most of the time it is just a hazy greenish glow like an illuminated cloud, but some nights they really dance with neon pinks and purples too.
Northern Alberta, Northern Ontario.
Actually better than the Arctic.

Its awesome. When I was little I lived in Alaska and we saw it a lot. The auroras would even dance for us! I've yet to see a picture that does them justice.

Best in fall but sunspot activity is a low point in the cycle so may be a awhile before any spectacular shows

Yes, it is an amazing sight. It can rarely be seen below the 45th parallel, so obviously the further north you go the more likely you are to see it.

No, I have not seen it.

Does that mean I can say that it does not exist, and mock those who say is does?

Would that make me an Auroraborealiathiest?

Edit:

Mohayrix - thanks!

Athiest Eye Candy - I used your question to make a bit of a joke, but I want you to know it wasn't a shot at you or any of your posts. I hope I didn't come across that way.

Yes, but I didn't get the whole effect. I think you have to live in Alaska for that. I live in Michigan, the sky just looked kinda green and swirly.
