Yes, I do it all the time and travel all over. Check that the web site is one of the major vendors (travelocity, expedia, etc.) or the web site of a real airline.

Yes, it is very safe. In fact if you buy via a high street travel agent they will actually use the Internet themselves.

Some of the big Internet Travel Companies such as Opedia offer excellent value, immediate booking and guaranteed service, with excellent search facilities across all airlines.

An important safeguard when buying anything on the Internet is to ensure you only buy from a trader who provides a secure site. This should be evident from a warning message you will receive as you make a booking which pops up telling you the site is secured and a small icon of a padlock will also appear. DO NOT enter your credit card details if a site is insecure.

Some major airlines and some of the "cheapies" have their own secure sites. BA; Air France; RyanAir; Flybe for example the latter has announced today (16 March) a new "Customer Account" facility which will speed up bookings and make their site very user friendly.

If things do go wrong and you have purchased using a credit card then the law on Consumer Credit says that your card supplier/bank are equally liable for the sum you have lost. Contact them and they will refund you and pursue the seller.

The major sites will be real companies and won't run away with your money. The big sites include expedia, ebookers, opodo, teletext plus the high street agents wil also have their own websites.

Make sure that the website starts with https:// instead of http:// when entering your card details. if it doesn't, it's not a secure website.

Yes it is. Just make sure you do your homework on the site, most sites are abta approved just like the travel agents so you can always look them up on the abta website!!
Good sites include Opodo, Expedia, Travelbag etc.
