My friend just got a new pc so they gave us our old one for our 3 yo daughter to go and play internet games. This system is completely wiped out with nothing on it, including an operating system.
-I don't know much about computers but I know there are operating systems that are free that exist. I would like to install one of these free o/s's on the computer. It has a cd-rom drive.
-I have a laptop and desktop besides this so i would be able to download and burn any cd's to install it. I will need help "booting" it on the clean pc.

Help, may I have a link to a free o/s website (preferably Linux), directions on how to make the cd/dvd, what to do to boot that cd/dvd on the clean new pc.

Thanks so much =] !

Linux is fab (and free) but to be honest with you, if you need help finding it on the net (took me under 5 seconds with google), then you ARE going to find installing it a challenge.

you will need to download it, burn a CD to make it bootable and install from there.

It isn't difficult but if you are wanting to be able to use everyday programs, than I strongly suggest you use an old copy of 98 XP or whatever else the Pc is cable of running.

OR ask a local geek to help you out installing linux - and then also helping you find some programs suitable for a 3 year old.

Frankly a 3 year old an a PC sounds a bit optimisitic even if she is EXTREMELY bright. - I am not sure how many educational programs are avaiable for Linux, might be worth thinking about before installing it.

I highly suggest trying Ubuntu for your situation. It will have some learning curve keep in mind, but a lot of Windows users can generally work with it okay. Ubuntu provides free CD's through a program known as Ship It. Currently they are only providing CD's of the older version. However, this is a long term support version, so you needn't worry.

Yeah i have gotta flow with J P in this one. Linux is a free operating equipment, no longer the most sensible or sport-well suited, yet because it is going to develop into more advantageous conventional, more advantageous applications are being designed for Linux compatibility. in my opinion, I definitely have XP, yet I definitely have some associates that are very pleased with Linux

If you don't know much about computers, Linux is probably not for you. I would just grab a copy of Windows XP while it's still available.
