I saw a television show recently on the History Channel about hell, and a Muslim imam told how hell would not last forever for most people, and eventually almost all would make it to heaven after suffering in hell, and only the most vile and evil people would spend all eternity in hell without ever going to heaven. Is this what most Muslims believe? Can anyone explain this belief more fully or refute it?

I'm not a scholar or anything
but basically the belief is that
most people do not spend their whole life committing sin
and your time here you have committed sin is equivalent in hell time.
And when you have served your time in hell God lets you go to one of the 7 levels of heaven (which of 7 levels you go to depends on your good deeds and how strong your faith is, 7 is the highest where you see God and all the prophets)
God is the Most merciful and Beneficial, so if he wants he can forgive murder ..depending if you repent and such things like this. But the one thing that is not forgivable is associating partners with God. But then again God is most merciful and can forgive anyone for anything. And anything before Islam (like if you convert) is forgiven ..everything.
So yes eventually if you have committed sins (that God decides not to forgive because you didn’t ask for forgiveness or whatever) you serve your time in hell for it, then with God's mercy you go to Heaven.

Only God is to judge.

The Quran says people in Hell will abide their ***Forever.

[10:27] As for those who earned sins, their requital is equivalent to their sin. Humiliation is their lot, and no one beside GOD can protect them. Their faces will seem overwhelmed by masses of dark night. They will be the dwellers of Hell; ****they abide therein forever. ****

Muslims do believe in the Purgatory, but those people will not have come from Heavan or Hell. But will eventually enter a lower Paridise. But as far as the people in Hell, the Quran says over and over they will suffer their enternally, timeless, and forever.

Peace Be upon you. More Ayats from the Quran Below.

[5:36] Certainly, those who disbelieved, if they possessed everything on earth, even twice as much, and offered it as ransom to spare them the retribution on the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them; they have incurred a painful retribution.

[5:37] They will want to exit Hell, but alas, they can never exit therefrom; their retribution is eternal.

[39:71] Those who disbelieved will be led to Hell in throngs. When they get to it, and its gates are opened, its guards will say, "Did you not receive messengers from among you, who recited to you the revelations of your Lord, and warned you about meeting this day?" They will answer, "Yes indeed. But the word `retribution' was already stamped upon the disbelievers."

[39:72] It will be said, "Enter the gates of Hell, wherein you abide forever." What a miserable destiny for the arrogant.

There are more and more, and more verses like these.

Yes it is possible for some people to spend time in Hell before going to Heaven but only God knows who will fit in that category. And since God is Merciful too many might just get a break and granted Heaven!

Yes, there are those who will stay in hell forever, most as I know will eventually get out.
