At least some kind of certificate. Some tour agencies will not hire without it. I know a woman, she is a friend of friend in Bangkok, and she helped translate and show me around Bangkok a year ago for a week. She was not happy with her job at the time. She decided that week she wanted to be a tour guide. She went to school for a year. she tried to get a job but, you first have to have a certificate. What they do is there is some book learning and then during the course, you have field trips to various sites and have to learn about them and then write about them, summarize what you see etc. I helped her a couple times with her english and how to summarize the site. It appeared to be a lot of work. Reading, writing and field study.

As far as I know she is working in the industry. Like I said it takes about a year to accomplish and a good knowledge of english. Written and spoken.

I tried to find the school's web site but, I remember there are a couple in Bangkok. Cost is around 20,000 baht for the whole course. I think that is what she told me.

Good luck.

Yes you have to. To get a certificate, some effort and funds are required but once you get it and have enough experience at travel companies, you can start out your own travel company. In this country it's a very good business and will be much better. Go on and get it!

You're going have to have one to be considered for work in ANY tourism industry, except for hostess/host, reception and janitorial staff.
