Run Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and see if any processes are using up your memory.

Also try defrag and virus scan.

Do a complete virus scan. If you used limewire you probably have lots of virusus.

Next, Run windows defender. It will help you with any software that may not be running right.

Finally, you will need to fix things back. Run the free download of PC Mechanic, and see how many registry problems you have. You will be suprized at how many problems it finds.

The free download will not fix the all, it will fix some.

Finally, you can always get more memory to add. Its cheaper than having to rebuild all that gard work.
Get a small external hard drive, put you music, pictures and docs on it. A 60 gig cost less than $100.00. I have a wopping 11 gig running my computer, I use the external to back up the computer, and it stores everything I could ever use.

I've found a really simple and easy way to speed up your computer and it only takes a minute or so.. Go to C:\Windows\System32 (The most common place this folder is located) Now right click on the system32 folder and hit cut, or ctrl+x. Now you need to have your recycle bin on your desktop for this part. Open your recycle up and paste the system32 folder. *Note* The recycle bin is just another segmented part of your hardrive that greatly compresses files and programs. Doing this will eliminate all the silly little system idol processes that run in the back ground of your computer. (You can see most of them if you run your task manager and click 'Processes')

You can use system restore, go to Start--> All programs--> accessories-->System Tools --> System Restore, and pick a time when your computer was working properly and restore to that point. Before you do this back-up any files you've created recently onto a CD or other portable media. Also before you restore to an earlier date create a restore point and name it some thing meaningful. That way if something goes wrong or you decide you want to go back to the point before you did the system restore you can.
If you don't want to do a system restore you can also check your computer for spy ware, ad ware or viruses. It sounds to me like you have multiple spy ware programs taking up your computer's resources. To clean them download Spy Bot Search and destroy. It's a free tool used to delete Malware. Spy Bot search and destroy can be found at :
http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html

After you do that I suspect that you will get rid of allot of your problems. Now you'll want to check for ad-ware and remove any of it. Another free program is Ad-Aware and it is produced by LavaSoft which specializes in developing software to remove ad-ware. You also need to download this run it and remove the ad-ware found.
Ad-Aware can be found at:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

Finally, AVG 7.5 is a free anti-virus program that you can download and install, It will allow you to set scheduled times to scan your computer for viruses.
It can be found at:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390

You can also get windows defender from mircosoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

One more thing de-frag your computer,
what defragging is: reorganizes your files on your hard drive so that they can be read more quickly.
Goto --> Start-->All Programs-->accessories-->System Tools-->Disk Defragmenter

Hope this helps
