What would be a good solution that does not require a $1500.00+ lens? I have been told to try a spotting scope with an adapter, as well as a telescope with an adapter. My skill level would be hobbyist. I'm using a Canon Eos and an Eos Digital (Rebel).
Thanks!

Depends on how much telephoto magnification you want.
Also helps to know what you are shooting.
Oh, and does it need to be portable? What about weight?

As with any camera lens, the $$$ go to good glass, with minimal distortion. Sure, you can buy an ultra-cheap telescope at K-Mart, but the small lens will make it about f-16 (if you are lucky) and chromatic distortion will smear colors.

You can compensate for the f-stop by having longer exposures, IF you aren't trying to take "action" (ie sports) shots.

If you want a decent high-power telescopic lens, check out the cheaper telescopes by Meade and Celestron. Be prepared- they are big and heavy...

You can get a Canon digital 70-300mm zoom lens for $350 on this site: http://www.expresscameras.com/prodetails.asp?prodid=439646&start=1
That would be fine for telephoto photography. I use a similar Nikon lens.
