I am 19 and a freshman in college. While here at school, I met this girl and since then we've become a couple. She is White and I am Black, and the problem is that recently some of my friends and even my family has told me that they have a problem with it. I love her to death and we have a great relationship together but I dont understand why certain people have a problem with an interracial relationship. I understand that the vast majority of people aren't like this but for those who are, can someone please explain why?

it's messed up and beyond logical or moral reasoning. old fashioned, messed up, prejudice, pure and simple.
I have friends that are mixed and they're awesome and they're kids are awesome. Plus, mixed kids are the most beautiful around!

As far as friends go, it is none of their damn business who you choose to have a romantic relationship with. You can ask them exactly what it is about your girlfriend that they find objectionable. Is it only because she is white or is there something in her personality that bothers them? As far as your family, that is a bit different. Many families are upset when one of the kids gets involved with someone of a different nationality, much less a different race. It is a cultural thing. Also, at age 19 whether you like it or not they still consider you a child who is unable to make any wise decisions.
Although you may not believe it, at age 19, your chances of staying with this woman forever are slim. Take it from an old guy who has been around, you will become involved with more than one woman during your university years and they could be of any race or nationality. Remember, it is your life and if your family doesn't like a particular girlfriend because of her nationality, they will get over it. You'll see, they will have less to say as you get older and they realize that you are an independent adult. By the way, my wife of 18 years died about 3 years ago and although I miss her, I have become romantically involved with a woman who is not the same race as I. I have received nothing but positive reactions from friends and family. So you see, things never remain the same. Just stand your ground. Good Luck.

Ignorance.

Somewhere deep down, I think there are feelings of inferiority. And that inferiority is validated when someone from your race choses to love someone outside of that said race. And in some way they think you are rejecting your own color (or lack thereof).

But....

Skin is only skin deep.

I don't really know why people react that way. and its sad, but you shouldn't let it bother you, as long as you both are happy that is what counts. and the people that you love don't understand it, there is really nothing you can do. but tell them how you feel and it is your life. be happy . and don't worry about what others think. good luck.

Inter-racial relationships are kind of complex. It has issues like family background, race, religion, tradtion, culture and so on. I would not advise anyone to go into this type of relationship but friendship is always welcome. Good luck.
