Check the exhaust system and and try a tune up because you're plugs not firing can cause excess fuel which creates sputtering and popping on combustion

i own a repair shop ,and id say its in the timing of it,with a lot of miles on it id say the timing chain and gears are about worn out in it,and this throws everything out of whack on it,and will cause it to pop back and sputter a lot,but you might want to have this checked, this is an old vehicle, and probably needs some maintenance work done on it,good luck i hope this helps.

Distributor, rotor, condenser, plug wires, timing and plugs. In other words; A tune up. Older vehicles like yours needs a duel point plug due to the low octane and unleaded fuel. Burns up plugs quick.

Note i own the same 1982 Lincoln mark you own. I am dead serious here, the best thing you can do is CONVERT IT TO CARB! DO NOT LISTEN TO WHAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE SAYING ON THIS BOARD. THEY DO NOT KNOW THE CAR OR ITS CHARACTERISTICS.

SEARCH OR CALL EDELBROCK OR HOLLEY FOR A 2 BBL CARB. INSTALL AND DRIVE TROUBLE FREE!!! THESE CARS ARE IGNITION NIGHTMARES! I DID THIS ON MY CAR AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM SINCE.

PLEASE WRITE ME AT THE MARKISALIVE@YAHOO.COM TO LET ME KNOW THE OUTCOME.

That sounds to me like a bad (sticking or burned) exhaust valve. Try a compression test to confirm this or to rule it out.
