I have heard that many consider their Lutheran faith to be foundational to their Christian faith. This seems distressing to me, as religion in and of itself is not God inspired, but man inspired. Any thoughts?

OU812 - of course not. I'm simply stating that I personally know people who are devout Lutherans who have told me personally that they are Lutheran 1st and Christian 2nd. What are your thoughts?

After reviewing the answers provided to this question, I am just amazed.
The answer to your question is that I am a Christian first and then I am affiliated with a Lutheran church. Christianity is the religion and Lutheran is the denomination. The denomination and to a greater extent the sub denomination, convention or in the Lutheran’s case synods are a by-product of the practical application of peoples’ religion. We form denominations, sub denominations, conventions and/or synods in order to establish fellowship with other believers, to pool our resources together to evangelize, for Christians missions work, governance, and to even preserve sound biblical doctrine. Denominations will typically be affiliated to one systematic theology. One of the exceptions would be the Southern Baptist Convention that is prominently Arminian, but Calvinism is becoming more popular. It just happens to be that the denomination and the theology in this case (with Lutheranism) have the same name.
I would like to think that my denominational affiliation would imply that I am a Christian. But can some people worship Lutheranism above their religion (Christianity?) Probably. Just like people worshiping other things above God (idolatry).
I hope this helps.

The Lutheran religion is a denomination, just like any other Christian religion.
Take a look through history. All Christian religions have their own human makings in them.
Who's to say that God didn't inspire Martin Luther? You? God?
Who are you to say that your denomination is any more God-inspired than the Lutheran religion?

i am Lutheran, but I just consider myself a Christian. I listen to baptist radio and I am thinking of trying a baptist church. Denomination really does not matter as long as you are saved.

What are you talking about. I'm Lutheran. It's a Christian religion.
Are you suggesting that everyone should practice born again politics in order to have their religion considered acceptable to you?
