Should Marion claim a Defensive Player of the Year award?
he hasnt been ever mentioned a Defensive First or Second teamer which is interesting considering his stats. Let me present my 2 cases....
Case 1: At the moment he is averaging 2 steals and 1.6 blocks per game. great numbers for someone who is only 6'7. Case 2: A lot of people are saying Dirk deserves MVP. Dirk is shooting over 50% this year. in the 3 games they played this year Marion defended him into....
(game 3)56 mins - 11/28FG and 3 turnovers - Suns win
(game 2)40 mins - 8/20FG and 2 turnovers - Mavs win
(game 1)43 mins - 11/19FG and 4 turnovers - Mavs win
The numbers may not stand out to you, but a 6'7 player holding a 7 footer to these numbers is pretty amazing. this of course is just on case against the best player in the L. lets not forget Marion's work on other key offensive players also. Does Marion deserve DP of the Year? How about at the very least a first team selection???

Shawn Marion is a great overall player. Any team will pick him up in a heartbeat. However, offensively or defensively, he is always overshadowed by a another player.
Definitely first-team all defense!!!!

At the all star break most "experts" felt the DPOY was Okafor
stand out defensive players are topped off by the Okafors, camby, and D Howard
as for your Dirk comparison for DPOY so what? Dirk gets shut down by shooting guards as he can't take them into the post. Dirk was taken out of things by freaking Ryan Bowen in the playoffs 2 years ago and Posey in the finals last year as dirk choked away any chance of his team winning.
Also the rockets McGrady does a fantastic job on no-win-zki but he's nothing special on defense
Guys like Odom also eat Marion alive
the matrix is a good all around player but not a DPOY

How can he be when his team doesn't play defense, 3 games against the Mavs should not decide who gets that award. Personally I would not put any of the Suns on that list list, maybe 2nd team for lack of candidates.
Steals are over rated, you get those usually by not guarding your man and a loose ball just so happends to come your way.

At the very least, he should be on the defensive first team. He definitely deserves to be considered for the defensive player of the year, but I think it should go to Marcus Camby. That guy is a machine.
