I basically want to know what does the category of Alcohols viz. Whisky, Brandy,Rum & GIN signify?

They're all made using different processes and as such taste differently as well. Those three that you mentioned are also further split into subcategories depending on where they were made and what ingredients were used. Alcohol is the common ingredient in all of them, but much like beef can be steak, filet mignon, porterhouse etc. so can alcohol be brewed with different materials.

The word is the diminutive of "water" in various Slavic languages. Whiskey means "water of life".Brandy (short for brandywine, from Dutch brandewijn—'burnt wine') is a general term for distilled wine, usually 40–60%. For rum one claim is that the name is from the large drinking glasses used by Dutch seamen known as rummers, from the Dutch word roemer, a drinking glass.I dont know about gin.

Vodka means water in Russian
Gin is a derivation of the Dutch word for juniper which is the berry used to flavor it and whisky I don't know about,
