I was writing a paper and the health effects are obvious, but are there any other effects, good or bad? Do you have higher self-confidence, are you getting less jobs because some tattoos cannot be covered, etc.? What does it feel like immediately after you get a tattoo?

I didn't experience any side effects. it depends on what tattoo shop you go to. my mom went to one and she didn't know that they dont sterilize their equipment. Her tattoo became puffy, because they went too far into her skin and she get an infection; the same with her nose piercing. But for me, the place I went to was great. My tattoo healed in 7 days and i couldn't even feel a thing the second day. It hurts the first time your getting it done, because you dont know what to expect, but after a while you get used to it and it doesn't hurt anymore, you get the feeling that someone is slicing your skin with a razor blade, but it doesn't hurt. It stings while in the healing process if someone hits you in the spot. They're addictive though, once you get one you want to go back and get another. I got mine in January and I'm already planning my second one.

My tattoo is my fiance's name inside a heart with wings. i drew it in the sand when we went to the beach together and I later got it on my back. i'm only 18 so my friends thought it was stupid. "what if you break up?" they always say. but a tattoo means a lot more than just ink, its a reminder of something that heppened in your life. A tattoo is permenant and that's why I got it. We plan on getting married, but if for some reason it doesn't work out then, because I have the tattoo, my fiance will always be a part of me (on my back)

I would not say the health effects are obvious, unless you say "none". Real research - and not the unsubstantiated (and trivial to begin dismantling) theories linked to by horsense. Cancer is one of the big illusions, and no data exists that it's any more than paranoia.. HIV, Hepatitis & infection are *possible*, sure, if you go to a bad shop; you're skin is being pierced. People die of nasty bugs gotten from hospitals as well. Will you skip going to the emergency room after a bad car accident? Anecdotal is just that. Since you're writing a paper I will petition you make sure of your sources on this. There is enough untruth out there already, and you do the academic community a disservice if you don't keep on the straight & narrow.

Passing on the personal affects already mentioned by others, the biochemical is interesting. The endorphin release is similar to that from an intense workout, weather it be endurance or strength training. However, having done both, it still differs quite a bit. The effect starts about 5-15 minutes in, and at least in my case does not have a tremendously long duration; maybe 2-3 hours at most. In my case it bears a similarity to a mild stimulant (but with some perception fogging, similar to alcohol) during it's active phase. However, when "off" of the affect I find a small downturn in mood - not enough to seriously affect one's mood, but if it's presence isn't known about and one is already a bit down, I can see it having an affect.

There are also social-psychological affects as well, but I'm not sure how much you want to hear. It's the kind of thing you would learn about in any undergraduate class on group dynamics, especially in how relations work with respect to disparaged groups, and I'm really just an amateur in that area anyhow.

Technically, any tattoo can be covered. Whether it's with clothing, or a special makeup specifically made to cover up tattoos.

I work in accounting/account coordinating and I have never had trouble finding work because of my tattoos. Nor have I ever been turned down because of them.

Right after my tattoo, the area was a little tender, but basically it felt like a bruised scrape and the pain didn't last very long.

I got a tattoo when I was in the service. I had it put on my left upper arm so it wouldn't show if I had a T-Shirt on. I didn't want to advertise it................not because I was ashamed of it but because some employers don't want to hire people with tattoos that show (arms, etc.) I believe this is because of the image it presents if you are working with the public. Same thing with piercings that are evident. I have not heard of any side effects with tattoos. I don't believe getting them is as painful today as when I got mine while in the service. It just gets a scab on it and you have to leave it alone until it comes off by itself, or you may (1) get an infection, or (2) you may lose some of the color or colors of the tattoo.

My job is not affected, and I have a very visible position as an Executive Assistant to an Exec VP at a Conservative company.

Self - confidence was not much affected by first tattoo. Second one was adding to first. But my third.

I have always felt unattractive (big girl syndrome). I feel like the body guard when out with my girls. I have had three kids and have lots of stretch marks on my tummy and the tummy is not flat. I told my artist to highlight my curves, to high light what makes me sexy. And he nailed it. I don't mind showing people my tummy, stretch marks and all. I feel sexy, womanly, like a Greek goddess. Do I still need to lose weight...sure...but I my increased confidence has only made the journey easier.

I had one of my tattoos done to mark my achievements in a field I'm interested in working in, and to spur me on to achieve more. Although the meaning of it wouldn't be obvious to anyone else, to me it's specific to my goals and ambitions, and as such it helps me to keep working and moving forward. So in that sense you could say it's about identity and self-determination.

My best friends grandpa has alot of tattoos, and Im just here to tell you that when you get older...they look disgusting. You get all wrinkly then hair grows in the tattoo and just ruins it. It also will be very hard to find a job with a good pay. Even some colleges won't allow students with some tattoos. Besides they hurt to get them on. Good luck with whatever you do!
