How can people choose this story as evidence that God is against homosexuality when it deals with men wanting to gang rape another male (or male figure, since it was an angel, or messenger of the lord)? How can rape be equated with a loving homosexual relationship?

I think this is a really good question. Was it that they wanted to rape the angel that made it appalling? Was it that they were homosexual that made it appalling?

I think it was both that made it appalling. The People of Sodom and Gomorrah were supposed to be as evil as can be imagined. I do not think the story is about rape, power, lust or homosexuality. It is about evil. It showed just how evil the people were that they would consider doing those things to a messenger of God.

Sodom and Gomorrah were punished because they had no consideration for the poor, nor for the passing stranger to whom they offered no hospitality; nor would they even sell him any food or water.
