This is one of the results of training. The body becomes more efficient at pumping blood to the get to the working muscles. As a result of cardiovascular training that athletics and fitness demand, more blood is pumped per contraction. The heart has to pump less times hence the lower heart rate.

When you are fit, the muscles use oxygen more efficiently, so the heart doesn't have to work so hard to supply the muscles with oxygen.
