All you have to do is pony up the dough. From Earth First and the Sierra Club to the NREP, you can join if the price is right.

Earth First! is a good (free) organization to join, that doesn't contain all the bureaucracy of the larger nonprofits. Of course, that means that they cannot accomplish the large projects that the larger NGOs do.
Every metropolitan area most likely has a chapter of Earth First!. Action is local and each chapter works autonomously with no official leadership. They have a radical environmentalist ideology driving their activities so they might come across as ecoterrorists as some but they protest and act legally.
If your city has an alternative newspaper you may find meeting information. You can also find info at Indymedia.org.

It also depends on what environmental issue you want to address. I repair bikes for community use in order to promote alternative transportation.
