Well most western people think that china does not have the power to hit the USA with nuclear weapons, they are wrong. China can but a man into space now and no doult that techonlgy has been used in there nuclear weaponary. Even if not, they have an airforce and a fleet than can hit the USA with warheads. Not that long along a chinese sub followed a USA navy fleet in the around the china sea area, it was only spoted until it surfaced in a case of nuclear war that is well too late.
It does not matter if warheads are launched by rockets or by fleets or aircraft they both have the power to turn each other into pile of molten glass.
In effect of a nuclear attack on china, russia would also step in
fearing an attack on china is an attack on russia as close to one and another.
Just a rebuttle to DS above.
Firstly no aircraft sets sail at sea with out a full escort, aircrafts are simply aircraft carriers, they need protection, they don't have the firepower as destoyiers etc etc. With if the aircraft carrier was testing equiment they had a whole fleet that should had been watching over it.
It just goes to show that subs can out move fleets.
It is also worth noting that they do have a GPS system but is only for military use and that china has anti-satelline missiles now and fully tested as part of its modernisation process as well.
Even if the USA did launch a missile attack first, sooner or later china would get the USA.
And with some of china's sharing broaders with Russia, I very much doult they would sit on there arses and let parts of there country be irratated and simply do nothing about it, plus you forget Russa and china are becoming more open to each other, you just have to look at the process of the Russia-Sino relations in the last year and the process they have made in trade deals.

Given the number of Warheads each country has, I would say both would be toast. There is no way both countries could go to war without there being Nuke exchange.
There is no way the US could be the cat, given the problems America has in Iraq and that china is more modernized and has like 2 billion people, and a huuuge territory size.
Sending American troops to occupy China would be a mistake no president with the slightest ounce of intelligence would make....
...
On the other hand I dont see Chinese as cat either, not for the following century. Both countries have too much to loose for anyone doing something as silly, but sadly I would not rule out the possibility.
I kinda feel like half the world is playing GI Joe and the other Barbie, maybe we sould start giving kids toys that actually represent human evolution. Suggestions?

It really wouldn't be much of a contest. Even if China used nuclear weapons, they only have the ability to hit the west coast. So, you could say good-bye to L.A., but is that really such a loss?
Comparing a war with China with Iraq is ridiculous. China has an army with a central command. In other words, it has a head that can be cut off, Iraq doesn't. Besides, the US has been spying on China for 50 years now and now where it keeps all its weapons and already has weapons pointed at those weapons.
China is also too centralized. One bomb in Beijing, another in Chongqing, take out the Three Gorges damn and and block oil shipments. It would last a couple of weeks tops unless they pulled a Peal Harbor and struck first. But that would merely be delaying the inevitable
Just another comment to rebuttle drutazo below me.
China has an airforce, but no aircraft carriers an no planes that can fly over the ocean. Yes, China has put a man in space, but with Russia's help I might add. China's only option is to fire a missile thats accuracy would require GPS, the US's military satellites. And their submarine sneaking up on a US ship is hardly worth celebrating. The ship happened to be testing separate equipment and wasn't paying attention to such things. It was a human error and you can guarantee they were chewed out and it will never happen again. And I can also guarantee Russia would never join on China's side. They're just as apprehensive about China as the west. The most they would do for them is threaten to cut off the oil unless they pay 4 times the price. If it came to a war, China is SOL

I suspect both sides would effectively be anhilated - leaving Europe or some other "underling" to rise amongst the ashes of the "once super powers"
After all if most of the US / china was uninhabitable and people are dying all around you, it would be a bit optimistic to reckon you control much of anything any more.
Hopefully it will never happen, but I am sure one day it will -not perhaps the US - V - China but some sort of America - V - Someone war. China? Europe? "The East en masse" ?
Messy.

China will be cat and US would be mouse.
BUT...it would be a "Tom and Jerry" cat/mouse relationship.
China is bigger, larger army, a whole lot more soldiers.
US is smaller in size in comparison but im pretty sure we have better military technology that would make a huge difference.
like i said US=mouse China=Cat Both= Tom and Jerry
