If by this time, you still haven't got the rite firewire cable, video capture can also be thru USB as I had experienced few years back with my old laptop. USB is slower but can do. I then posted a question in answers on the procedure for video capture and the best answer was/is (am still using it) thru Windows Movie Maker.
a. Set the camera mode to play recorded video.
b. In the Movie Maker Tasks pane/Capture Video, click Capture from video device.
... click WMMaker help for more details.

You can purchase a 4 to 4 pin firewire cable at your local computer store for less than $10.

If not, then...There is one cable made by Pixela that connects to your camcorder using a DV/FireWire connection and connects to your computer using a USB connection. It is $119

I've never used it, so I can't guarantee it will do the job as well as a FireWire setup, but it is worth a shot.

There are 4 pin to 4 pin FireWire cables, try CompUSA.

There are also 4 pin FireWire to USB, but I don't know how well they work.

There is also a 9 bit (not 10 bit) USB dangle sold by Turtle Beach.

Buying a 4-4 pin firewire cable is more worthier than using USB cable to transfer video. You will suffer a lot with USB.

If you are using a camcorder there a re several video capture devices around but I would rather go and explore the device through My Computer in Windows Xp. This is like when you go to Drive and so on. From there, search for the desired video file and then convert it to the desired format.
