I have had 4 houses. We have used vinly tile in all of them. If you put it down correctly, you won't have any trouble. WE have it in our basement. Black and white and it looks great. In the kitchen we put down tile that looks like slate. When we put it down, a few pieces kept sliding. (under the fridge, etc) So my husband glued those pieces with Gorilla glue. No problem since then. I hear people say you get what you pay for. Well both of these floors came from Home Depot. They are the Newport brand. The cheapest that H.D. sells. They are both very nice looking tiles. The kitchen cost us under $50 to do. I would recommend this brand. I really like it.
Good Luck
Don't go into debt to do the floor. Do what you can afford and down the road, do the more expensive. You will be happy with the outcome.

I haven't heard very good things about vinyl tiles, my inlaws have them and hate them, they constantly come apart, seams show, they nick easily if you drop something... I have Wilsonart laminate tile in my kitchen and LOVE it, you can drop a bowling ball on it and it wouldn't dent! That particular brand is expensive, but there are tons of laminate lines out there and if you really call around to the stores, you can get a good price, just ask if there are any sales or special pricing, they'll sometimes give you a break on the price to get you to buy with them. There are also discontinued patterns, odd lots, etc, just ask, you never know!

Depends on the grade you purchase. Getting the floor ready for the tile can be expensive and time consuming. Also depends on the type of flooring now installed. Beware of the cheaper laminate flooring. It is easily scratched and difficult to replace a damaged board when in place.
If you have never done either installation prior. Buy a book, Most home supply companies have pamplets you can get free. Step by step prep and installation.

It depend on what you what in terms of vinyl tile, The solid colors are nice and you can checker board style or go solid all the way. It depend on the manufactors and prices varies. Laminate is good but it has drawback such as noise, scratches very easily and if not installed properly it fail easily.
If I were you I shop around and get prices and expert advice. Avoid Home Depot and Lowes.

Where flooring is concerned, you really do get what you pay for. Instead of laminate, you might look into engineered wood products. No, they're not as durable as laminate, but they can be less expensive and just as easy to maintain. Vinyl tiles and tongue-and-groove flooring are both pretty easy for a do-it-yourselfer (I've done both), but the tiles are certainly easier (and faster).
