visit some websites or go the radio shack they may have a cross reference part number that is a direct replacement for the IC you are playing with. Other than that I would go to national semiconductor or other manufacturers website and look up the data sheets for your IC and see if any others or replacements are listed on that same data sheet.

If push comes to shove and you are in a bind you can probably use a programmable one that you can configure yourself to operate like the 147 you are dealing with, but this will depend on whats available in your schools dept and how familiar you are with the programming and other hardware.

I would imagine that minimum order quantities would apply but someone out there on the web has got to have some.

It depends on which specifications of the LM74LS147 are important. The LS type is a fast IC. For a security alarm I am sure you do not need fast. So try 74147, or 74HC147 or 74C147 any of those will probably work for your project.

Otherwise a GAL or PAL can be programed to work as a 10 line to 4 line encoder.

You can also use a 74LS148 if you don't need all 10 lines. It is an 8 line to 3 line encoder.
