Well, to start, you can always ask someone where the couple is registered.
Failing that, there's nothing wrong with the gift certificate IF you know that they have a need for it. Did they just buy a house? If so, then Home Depot or Lowe's would be appropriate. Are they saving for that flat-panel TV? Then Best Buy would be appropriate. It's not that a gift certificate is an inappropriate gift - if you know that they have a need/use for it, then it's still a gift from the heart and is a nice gesture.
If all else fails, and you're still uncertain as to what to do, I would say to simply write them a check. That's always appropriate, too and will allow the couple to purchase whatever they need as they begin their life together.
I hope that helps!

In my opinion, for a wedding, no.
Gift cards are cash but you are limiting where they can spend it. They can not combine various gift cards and get something really nice. If you must give cash, which I also think is tacky, give real cash in a nice envelope designed for it. If you know they are going on their Honeymoon to some foreign country, giving cash of that nation does show you put some thought into the gift therefore is not quite as tacky.
Better and almost as easy is just finding out where their gift registery is and pick something from their list. As far as not knowing, you can call them up and ask.

I don't see why not. But it depends on where you get the gift cards at...and if the couple would be offended to get one from that place in particular. A gift card from Home Depot, Best Buy, Pier 1 or other places that would come in handy for a couple would be fine.

Most couples now prefer gift cards - a good idea is the VISA, Mastercard or American Express cards that can be used anywhere. It keeps down the duplicated gifts and insures that they will have something they really need or want - if it's a large item, they can combine the cards from the same store - plus use the generic VISA, M/C or AMX to go with them.

OH MOST DEFINITELY! Many couples are actually registering at Home Depot these days. With major appliances on the registery in many cases and no ONE guest being able to spend that kind of money, several gift cards can go together to get that side by side.....

If you don't know the couple very well, it's acceptable to give a gift card. However, if you do know them quite well, it's best to give an actual gift. Just be sure to include a gift receipt in case they want to exchange it.
If you're aware of any social causes they advocate, consider making a donation in honor of their wedding.

oh yes! since they aren't really common among wedding gifts, either of those are perfect. home depot is wonderful because it can help establish a home or start a garden. best buy is also great because people love CDs, DVDs, or whatever electronics. a gift card to either place can make their new home feel more "homey".

Contrary to one the previous answers, wedding gifts are not supposed to be "intimate". They're supposed to be practical items to help the couple set up housekeeping. Gift cards (or just plain cash) are perfectly OK.
