My son who turned 4 in January, FINALLY got how to spit out the toothpaste and bubbles (most of the time!). It is very natural for kids to want to swallow what is in their mouth, it is related to the sucking reflex (What goes in must go down...unless it is medicine. LOL). Just keep encouraging him to spit, even if he has swallowed. Eventually, he will spit some of the toothpaste/bubbles out in the sink. When he does, make a huge deal out of it. This will encourage him to spit more often.....which can make a mess, but it is fun.
Many children under age six have not fully developed their swallowing reflex and may be more likely to inadvertently swallow toothpaste. If you are really worried, put no more than a pea sized drop of toothpaste on the toothbrush or switch to a fluoride free toothpaste (like Oral-B/Orajel).

use a very small amount of kids toothpaste and he will be okay if he swallows it. have him rinse. he'll like having to spit a cup full of water out. tell him he only gets one chance though so if he swallows it no spitting.
i would also just brush his teeth for him. it is something he needs to learn but they need to be clean as well. let him try but always go over it too.
take care. sd

The important part of the process is the actual brushing of the teeth, not the toothpaste itself. And he actually shouldn't rinse out his mouth because that rinses away the flouride. On a news story, the expert said that most toothpaste does nothing to help our teeth because we rinse off the floride. Give the process time and he will get it. Keep it fun or he will shy away from brushing his teeth. Have you taken him to the dentist? He is old enough. He/she may also be able to help you as well, they know tricks.

Clean his teeth FOR him with no toothpaste on the brush. Do that for a couple of days and then add a little toothpaste and spread it on the brush well with your finger. Once you have done it 3 times a day for him for a few weeks start letting him do it himself...with you guiding his hand. Get him some dixie cups and let him use some water out of those to rinse with.

Sweetie that is a ruff process, you just have to hang in there and keep telling him. Also they sell the tooth paste that is not harmful if they swallow it, good luck

All kids to try to swallow I would suggest getting the toothpaste for kids of course. With my daughter we have a routine I brush her teeth and we always use the cute little cups and say SPIT then she rinses and spits it out. Then she brushes by herself to try to do it like me.

Don't worry about the toothpaste. Just have him brush his teeth with a plain brush. It's the brushing, more than the toothpaste, that prevents cavities. Gradually add a tiny, tiny bit of toothpaste. He'll get it as he gets older. Also, brushing your teeth with him will encourage him, as most children want to immitate adults. Relax.
