The USB connection is for downloading stills - you need to install a firewire card in your PC to capture the video. The good news is they're cheap (even for a student) and easy to install. Once everything's connected, you won't see the camera appearing as a new device in the same way that USB does, but your capture app will be able to access it.

The best quality video transfer is thru firewire.
Usually firewire (1394) cable is not standard for camcorders as there are different pc/laptop-end firewire pin configuration (4, 6 PIN) depending on pc/laptop brands. However, USB cables are supplied as standard since almost all pc/laptop use standard USB.
If by this time, you still haven't got the rite firewire cable, video capture can also be thru USB as I had experienced few years back with my old Dell laptop (no firewire slot). USB is slower but still can do. I then posted a question in answers on the procedure for video capture and the best answer was/is (am still using it) thru Windows Movie Maker.
a. Set the camera mode to play recorded video.
b. In the Movie Maker Tasks pane/Capture Video, click Capture from video device.
WMMaker help is very detailed.
