Trainability and intelligence are 2 different things. Usually dogs that have lower intelligence levels are easier to train because all they want to do is be told what a good dog they are. More intelligent dogs may be harder to train because they need extra challenges while training and get bored easily.

Not true at all. In fact the opposite. "mutts", or mixed breeds as some people prefer, have capability of being very smart. I say capable because it depends alot on good training. They also have much less risk of predisposed medical problems that come with certain breeds. A big reason some breeds have come to be known for their "dumbness" or medical problems is because of repeated inbreeding. You are not likely to have this problem with mutts.
I have 2 mutts. They are 2 of the smartest dogs have a ever had...maybe even the smartest.
It mostly comes down to training. The better training you provide, the smarter your dog will be.

Teri M...I second-MUTTS ARE GREAT!

Out of my 5 dogs my mutt is probably the smartest. Her mom was a Dobie/Shepherd/Lab mix and we don't know what the dad was. She will be 6 this month and it seems like she learns something new every day (although not always good stuff.) We are still trying to make our fence Sarah (the dog) proof and we can't tie her out either because she can get out of anything in the mater of minutes. She has also learned how to get a drink out of the fridge by pushing on the water lever in the door ice/water dispenser. There are other things she has learned also just by watching us but to answer your question, no not all mutts are dumb.

Nope, I don't think mutts are dumb, but I don't think that they are, in general, anymore smarter than purebreds that are not byb or puppy-mill bred. For instance, purebred German Shepherds and Border Collies can be insanely intelligent and willing to learn. When you take a look at mutts, you have to remember, you can either wind up w/ the best qualities of the 2 or more breeds it "came" from... or it could wind up w/ the worst. I think genetics does play a role, but it all boils down to the individual.

NO! It may depend on the different breeds but just because it is a mutt doesn't mean that it is dumb. Also depending on the different breeds doesn't mean anything about training. Try to look up the breeds that he is mixed with. Some breeds are more difficult to train than others. Actually mixed breeds are less prone to diseases that pure breeds deal with.

Most mutts are more intelligent that pure breeds b/c they have not been inbred. All of my dogs except the Great Dane I have now have been mutts and were the smartest dogs I have ever owned.

All mutts are not dumb, it depends on the breeds that are in the mutt. If it has two smart breeds that are easy to train, it will most likely be smart and easy to train. It is just the same with the opposite.

not by a long shot, dogs no matter what there breed are only as dumb as they are allowed to be, it takes lots of Patience and time to train a dog.there was a dog trainer that was on TV years ago that made a point of saying there are no bad dogs just bad owners, that same goes for training.no dumb dogs

Mutts make the best dogs and can be your best friend. I had a mutt once and she was the smartest dog ever. She knew all kinds of tricks and learned them very quickly. She was very loyal and was always by my side. Her name was Poncho and I loved her very much and will never forget her beautiful face. Mutts are great!!

That is not true! Mixed breeds can be trained just like a purebreed, and they are definatly not dumb! Besides, he's still a puppy!
