I have a 2 year old black mouth cur and am wondering what other BMCs are like in a family setting. He came from a hunting line and I feel bad that he is not able to do what comes naturally to him. He's brought me a couple of squirrels but I reprimanded him for it. He is a sweet and gentle dog. He loves the kids and doesn't have a possesive bone in his body. My only problem is when he is on leash, he does not get along with other dogs. He is fine off leash, but I worry that he might maul a little poodle or something. Any advise would be great!

I have a Catahoula male from hog hunting lines that acts up in a vehicle when he sees another dog but is fine outside. In your case, with luck and patience, you may be able to change his thinking. Find out how close you have to get to another dog before he acts up. Praise him/treat him for not reacting. Over time, work to slowly decrease this distance by rewarding non reaction and walking away if he does. The idea is for him to associate him being on leash, another dog, and something good happening. In this type of situation, a reprimand will probably be counterproductive.
