http://www.biblegateway.com/versions/ has SOME of these, others may be available at other sites on line.

http://www.zondervanbiblesearch.com/ has a slightly different list. This is an on-line version of the software I use on the P.C.

Another on-line source is http://www.crosswire.org/ (The SWORD Project) They have MANY Bible versions, commentaries, and related books that you can download and software for reading them. I use this for some things that I have not found in other places.

The "BEST VERSION" depends on you. I AM a translator, and use Greek most of the time. The "BEST" translation is what best renders the MEANING of the original IN THE LANGUAGE YOU SPEAK. Most people do not speak "formal English" so the best for you depends on what form of English you speak and your ability to understand what you read.

This pretty well rules out the kjv since that language died a few hundred years ago...

Assuming you are a native American English speaker, look at these:
New International Readers' Version
Contemporary English Version
The Bible in Basic English
Easy-to-Read Bible
...
Those are all recent translations with good correspondence to the MEANING of the original texts into MODERN ENGLISH.
There are several other versions in Modern English which are GOOD, but are not as recent or as simply written. Here are the ones I am most familiar with:

New International Version
New American Standard Version (Actually in several editions, look for the most recent)
New Revised Standard Version
New Living Translation

I am not a good judge of the "best" translation.

My favorite is the New American Bible which is used for Scripture readings in every Catholic Church in the United States.

Here is the website: http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/

With love in Christ.

A great one I found is Bible Gateway. It has multiple translations, and commentaries.
