I mean seriously, bare w/ me here. If we are taught early on in grade school that what is written in the history book is true (which no one LIVING TODAY can verify). There are so many versions of history books, and versions of what happened in some situations. So why is it so hard for us to believe what's written in the bible? Is it b/c some stories written a/b are quite remarkable and unbelievable? But why do we believe that during the Civil War we won against a country that had been established for hundreds of years!? I just want opinions, not an uproar.

But they say they have found Jesus' tomb and bones? They will believe that to try and disprove what the bible says, but not enough to accept it?

Because the Bible reveals the true condition of people's hearts, and there are those who don't want their sinfulness exposed by the truth in the Word.
Jude 1:15-19 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.
But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.
That pretty well explains the whole thing.

You seem to know a little about the bible. You don't know much about history.
You mentioned that the Civil War was fought against a country that has been established for hundreds of years. You failed to say what you're talking about. Both sides of the Civil War were from the same country. Both sides were established at the same time, neither hundreds of years before.
History is written by people who study evidence that has been found and passed on from generation to generation. Each adding to as evidence is found. Sometimes corrected as new evidence is found. It's an on-going study.
On the other hand, the bible comes from ancient writings by very superstitious people who were afraid of spells and curses, signs and omens. We have no way of checking their background.
The reason I don't believe in the bible is because it's full of the supernatural. I believe in the natural only. Supernatural is superstition.

I used to fiercely defend every word in the Bible as being a fact. But then I realized that the God of the Bible liked to punish entire cities for the sins of a few. And then I majored in foreign languages at college and realized how truly impossible it would be for the Bible to have been translated accurately by so many different people.
So next I left Christianity by choice, refusing to worship such a cruel god. And consequently, I no longer believe what is written in the Bible.

If it really mattered (and since life is a very serious issue), then God would show himself -- or do something more than appear as a remote, disinterested, detached being who expects his beloved children to find him by reading tales about talking snakes, burning bushes that do not burn up, 40-day floods (how DID Noah get all of those animals from around the world?), or by believing in a man who supposedly walked on water, or in the final revelation (complete disaster). Would an earthly parent do more than just leave a few abstract writings around for the children to live by? Would an earthly parent let his anger toward his children get to the point where eternal punishment is the only fate? That's why it is so hard to believe in the bible -- too much mystique about things that simply do not make sense.

History is written by the victors of the struggle. Dates and results of action can be cross-referenced and verified by a number of sources.
The bible, on the other hand, cannot be cross-referenced and verified. Even writers of the bible, when writing about the same subject, write totally differing accounts of the same event.
The Bible was never meant to be a historical document in the first place. It is a spiritual book filled with morality parables and the like. The problem with Fundies is they THINK it is a textbook and treat it as such.

...
*bursts into laughter*
Oh, my... I can't believe you actually typed that.
What I find even harder to believe is that you now expect us to take the other things you're saying seriously.
But to answer your question... many of us don't believe in the Bible because (a) it consists largely of religious myths, and (b) what history there IS in there has partially been corrupted by the game of "telephone" that's been played with it down through the centuries. Also, the Bible is chock-full of contradictions and inconsistancies:

In short, we hold it to be no more "true" than the holy texts of other religions.

I wonder if it's a matter of not wishing to believe in the Bible. It may be that the people have examined the Bible in light of their experience and found it incredible, impossible to believe.
What we are taught in grade school about history is subject to review when we are more mature and able to process more controversial and complex information. The examination of this information may lead us to understand that what we were told in grade school was an oversimplified story that won't do for real understanding.
The same maturity can also be addressed to the Bible. The information can be compared against extra-Biblical sources and examined textually for internal inconsistencies. The stories of people herding camels during the days of Joseph and his brothers might be compared to data that suggests the camels were not domesticated until much later in history.
People arrive at opinions by various means, working along different lines. If they arrive at opinions which differ from yours, it might help you to understand how they got there, rather than asking them to alter their beliefs to suit yours.

Well, one good reason is that there are many holy books out there. Why should I believe the bible, over, say, the Koran? Why do you not wish to believe in the Koran? Or the Tibetan Book of the Dead? Why do you not accept Greek mythology as fact? I think you can see the dilemma. Not to mention, the bible has a lot of weird sh*t about beating your slaves and selling your children into sex-slavery. Thats another reason I tend to suspect it doesn't have much connection with any "supreme" being.

Some times it's just a matter of realities realized. I was once a devout believer in the Bible and all that it stood for, but I was inquisitive and wanted to know why things were. When I
asked honest questions in good heart I met responses like that is not for me to know or God is mysterious and I should
just believe and not question. In time I came to realize that the Bible and it's religions are little more than safe houses for scared little children afraid to venture out and ask why. Since
that time I have ventured out far beyond the horizon and found
beauty and sunshine are all that exists.

Who said I believe my history books. I am sure they have lies in them written by the winners. But when a book says its the word of an Omnipotent being and cannot be fallible, and is fallible then I would assume it was just the work of fiction. One other thing why don't you believe in the other countless other books supposedly written or instructed by god?
