20, that's awesome. I had a cat who was very close to that, right around 18. He outlived every other 4 legged creature on the block. Speaking generally, most of these people are right about the change, but it really comes down to more specific factors like indoor/outdoor, weight, claws, medical issues like potential heart murmurs etc. If he's already hit 20, there's no saying, it's kind of "any day now." That sucks to acknowledge but it's reality. My 18 year old was fine, then one day I found him in a pool of water on my bathroom floor after I got home from work. The vet said they could stabilize him and he's be around for another couple months, but then he'd go, and he probably wouldn't enjoy the extra few months. 23-24 would be awesome. Keep him alive as long as he's ok. He's worth the vet bills, I know. If you're happy and he's happy, that's good, but it's time to let go when he starts slipping. Don't push him, he probably wants to spend all the time with you that he can.

The cat's life span like ours depends on many things and there are always exceptions! A cat dying at 30 is equivalent to a human reaching 100! In the right conditions with a healthy diet a cat stands a good chance of avoiding life threatening illness and a totally indoor cat is the least exposed! I've never been fortunate to keep a cat over 18 but have known a few! My old boy is starting to slow down at 15 but not enough to let a 2 year old female get the better of him!
As long as your cat remains happy and healthy make the most of your time with him however old he might be!

If it's an indoor cat, I hear 15-18 years is common. 7-10 is more common for outdoor cats. We have 4 cats that are all under 3 years old and I expect they'll be around for a very long time.

That is a good age for a cat i thought our cats lived a good age 18- 19 you also have to be a bit sensetive to the cat, do not keep him alive just because it will be a heartbreak for you when he passes away, if he is in pain let him go do not let him suffer, we have wonderfull memories of all our cats , some more than others, in ten years from now that is what you will have so enjoy the time you have with him now not worry when he will go, as dieing is the only certain thing in this life,

I think 15 is the average age that cats live to. some do live longer depending on how fit an active they are
My mother in laws cat lived till she was 21 she was mainly an indoor cat.
So yours is doing well to be 20.
My cat is coming up to 10yrs and she still acts like a kitten she is a small cat and spends most of the time inside. In summer she goes out more but in winter ist hard to get her to go out.

An indoor feline/beloved kitty cat, can live a long time. I knew a neighbor's outdoor girlie who had kittens when she was at least 18, or so her owners said. With proper care and nutrition, you may have these extra years to enjoy. I hope so. Our old "Kitty Boy" had kidney failure and spent the last year of his life on a heating pad just outside the back door. He was a permanent fixture, and seemed happy. When his fur began to look bad, we discovered he was probably in great discomfort, and had him put down, for mercy's sake. He was the best old cat we ever had, and he chose us....just showed up on the front porch one happy Sunday night. I hope your pet breaks all the records and has a long, long, series of lives. He is a CAT, after all, right? He is guaranteed at least nine!!

I have heard from my vet that the average life expectancy for an outdoor cat is 5 years and indoor cats 15 years.

Indoor cats can easily live over 20 years if well taken care of. I had a Siamese indoor cat that lived to 23 years old. Outdoor cats, I have not had that much luck with.

Cats generally live less than 7 years outside. If kept inside its no uncommon for them to go over 20 years. I've got one that is 19 years old and plays like a kitten. That cat living 33 years has me a bit concerned.
